‘No talks’ about Van de Beek leaving Man Utd despite limited opportunities

Donny van de Beek’s future remains unclear with ‘no talks’ having been held regarding a possible exit from Manchester United despite the midfielder’s limited opportunities this season.

Van de Beek signed for the Red Devils from Ajax in a deal worth up to £40m last summer but has struggled to win favour, starting just two Premier League fixtures in a disappointing debut campaign in English football.

Recent reports have suggested that the Netherlands international could look to leave at the end of the current season in search of regular first-team football, though The Athletic are reporting that Van de Beek ‘is not yet at the point of panic’ over his role at the club.

There has also been no indication from United that they want to move the midfielder on and there is a belief that the 23-year-old could prove a valuable addition to the side in time.

Van de Beek has struggled for opportunities in a central attacking role given the performances of Bruno Fernandes, whilst Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s apparent lack of trust in Scott McTominay, Fred or Nemanja Matic to operate as a lone holding midfielder restricts places in a deeper position.

United are understood to be keen on signing a new midfield anchor and there is hope that Van de Beek could thrive in a deeper role alongside an elite holding midfield player.

However, Paul Pogba’s presence also provides an obstacle to his hopes of regular minutes and much may depend on the future of the France international who is routinely linked with an exit.

Van de Beek is likely to want assurances over his role with the Red Devils after a frustrating campaign, one that can be attributed in some aspect to an adaptation period in the Premier League.

He will, however, be keen to secure a prominent position next term if he is to remain at Old Trafford beyond the summer transfer window.
