Barcelona’s new no.10

FC Barcelona have, on Wednesday, announced their official first-team shirt numbers for the 2021/22 campaign.

The main talking points stem from La Blaugrana giving the no.10 and no.7 shirts to new players this season.

The no.10 had, of course, become synonymous with Lionel Messi, who will go down as arguably the best player in footballing history.

However, after a historic stint at Barcelona, Messi would depart the Spanish outfit over the summer for PSG.

This, of course, meant that Messi’s famed no.10 shirt would be up for grabs in the future.

And, rather than waiting to hand it to a big new signing in the future, Barcelona have already given it to someone else.

That player, as shown below, is Ansu Fati:

Fati, like Messi, is a product of La Masia and would burst onto the first-team picture at a very young age.

Despite recent injury woes, Fati has already featured 43 times for Barcelona’s side at the age of just 18. But will the youngster be able to deal with the pressure of taking over Messi’s number? Only time will tell.

The other big number change for Barcelona this term comes at no.7.

Antoine Griezmann had previously donned this number during the 2020/21 season. However, the Frenchman has now departed for former club, Atletico Madrid.

So, Barcelona have opted to hand the no.7 to Ousmane Dembele for this season.
