Tottenham Hotspur have already bolstered their defensive ranks with the signing of Matt Doherty but fresh reports suggest that Jose Mourinho has an interest in another right-back this window…
What’s the word?
According to his former manager Yalcin Kosukavak, who was speaking to Ajansspor in an interview this week, Lille star Zeki Celik is attracting interest from the north Londoners.
“When I spoke to Zeki, he told me Sevilla and Tottenham are interested in him.
“Of course, Lille want compensation for him. If one of the interested clubs accept to pay the fee, then I think he could leave the club.”
The Telegraph’s Matt Law first reported Spurs’ interest in the 23-year-old last month, claiming that the exit of Serge Aurier or Juan Foyth could raise the funds to sign him. It’s thought that the Ligue 1 outfit would sell for £18m.
Kyle Walker 2.0?
Given that Doherty has come in and cemented his place as the first-choice under Mourinho, it would perhaps be a surprise to see the club move for another right-back.
However, if Aurier goes, he could well be needed as Kyle Walker-Peters has also been sold this summer.
Celik is an exciting prospect and one of many top players to be scouted and brought in by Luis Campos – per WhoScored, the Turkish international is averaging 3.2 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and one clearance per game.
He could well be a perfect fit at Tottenham too as he has modelled his playing style on former Lilywhites star Kyle Walker. He once said: “I’ve been watching him since he played in Tottenham. Sometimes Guardiola also plays him as a centre-back – something I have done myself.”
Lille have a proven track record of breeding through talent so there’s a lot less risk involved, you’d imagine.
