Christian Pulisic retained his spot in Thomas Tuchel’s starting lineup on Sunday and went on to deliver one of his best moments in a Chelsea kit in the process.
Pulisic drew the Blues level in a thrilling four-goal first half of an eventual 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge against fellow title challengers Liverpool. It was an impressive comeback for the hosts, which used goals from Mateo Kovacic and Pulisic in a three minute span to hit back after goals from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah at the other end of the pitch.
After Kovacic cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 42nd minute with a dangerous valley off the post, Pulisic tied things up after a confident finish into the top corner. N’Golo Kante hooked a pass upfield and over the Liverpool backline, allowing the U.S. men’s national team star to bury a left-footed effort into the top-right corner.
It was Pulisic’s third Premier League goal of the season and his first since November 20 against Leicester City.
Both teams had ample opportunities to win the match with both Edouard Mendy and Caoimhin Kelleher keeping their respective teams level. Mendy made a key save on Salah after halftime while Pulisic’s volley off of a cross was repelled by Kelleher.
Chelsea sits 10 points behind league leaders Manchester City heading into this week’s Carabao Cup semifinal first leg against Tottenham. The Blues will return to league play on January 15 at the Etihad Stadium, looking to avenge an early season loss to the Citizens.
