Mikel Arteta provides concerning Tierney & Lacazette updates ahead of Villarreal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the fitness of key pair Kieran Tierney and Alexandre Lacazette, with the news far from positive.

Elneny & Auba on target

The Gunners were of course back in action earlier this afternoon.

Arsenal made the trip to St. James’ Park, for a Premier League meeting with Newcastle United.

Arteta and co. headed into proceedings with one eye very much on matters in midweek, with the north Londoners of course set to face off with Villarreal in the 2nd-leg of their Europa League semi-final tie on Thursday night.

In turn, heavy changes were forthcoming, with the likes of Bernd Leno, Pablo Mari, Emile Smith Rowe, Thomas Partey and Bukayo Saka having been rested.

When all was said and done on Tyneside, though, it was two of those reintroduced to Arteta’s starting XI who proved the difference for the visitors.

First up was Mohamed Elneny, who drove a fine effort beyond Martin Dubravka from the edge of the area with just five minutes on the clock.

And the afternoon’s scoring was completed twenty five minutes from time, when Gabriel Martinelli’s pinpoint delivery from the left was volleyed home by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Arsenal, in turn, have climbed up to 9th in the Premier League table.

‘Haven’t trained…’

Even more important than guiding the Gunners back into the top half, though, is the fact that their 3-point haul this evening brought to an end a run of 3 outings without victory across all competitions.

In turn, after keeping their European hopes alive courtesy of Nicolas Pepe’s late penalty in midweek, Mikel Arteta will no doubt be hopeful of his side carrying their momentum into Thursday’s return meeting with Villarreal.

As outlined above, however, ahead of what is widely viewed as the club’s most important fixture of the season, this evening, Arteta confirmed some altogether concerning news on the personnel front.

Speaking as part of his media duties at St. James’ Park, the Spaniard was drawn on the wellbeing of Kieran Tierney and Alexandre Lacazette

Both have of course spent time on the sidelines of late, albeit with hope having remained that the stopper and attacker would return in time to feature in midweek.

Such an outcome, though, now looks altogether out of the question, with Arteta having labelled it as ‘unlikely’ that either will be fit enough to take to the pitch ‘in the next few games’:

‘They haven’t trained with us yet,’ the Arsenal boss explained to Sky Sports, as cited by Football365.

‘So it’s unlikely we’ll have them ready in the next few games.’
