Dowling heading towards West Brom blunder with £10m flop who can “show bits of magic” – opinion

West Brom chief Luke Dowling could soon steer the club into a disaster if emerging reports this week are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to TEAMtalk, the Baggies are weighing up a move for Stoke City outcast Tom Ince ahead of the transfer deadline this month.

It’s claimed that the 28-year-old is not part of Potters boss Michael O’Neill’s plans this season and as a result, is free to leave the club.

SPFL giants Celtic and Rangers are said to also be interested. Ince cost Gary Rowett £10m back in 2018 and is under contract for another two seasons.

Potential flop?

This is potentially a rather perplexing move from Albion. They do not particularly need a winger and they certainly do not need one that is struggling to cut the mustard in a mid-table Championship side.

The Englishman is yet to feature this campaign despite Stoke only picking up four points from their opening three games whilst last season Ince could only deliver three goals and two assists, averaging 1.7 shots and one dribble per game, via WhoScored.

Slaven Bilic already has Callum Robinson and Grady Diangana on the left as well as Matty Phillips, Kamil Grosicki and Matheus Pereira on the right.

Ince was once a promising talent, claiming himself that: “I am not one of those old fashioned wingers who just gets crosses in, I like to create things, show bits of magic.”

However such excitement is yet to ever be seen in the top-flight – from 48 appearances, he’s only provided three goals and one assist, highlighting exactly why he doesn’t deserve another opportunity here.

Grosicki was only brought in during the January transfer window whilst Phillips has featured for just 35 minutes all season. These are two players that contributed to the Baggies’ promotion push – why would Ince be an improvement on that?

The Potters flop is thought to be earning around £27k-per-week at the bet365 Stadium and that is too much of a gamble for Dowling to consider when his cash-strapped club needs every penny for a new striker.

AND in other news, West Brom would be landing their next Kevin Phillips in £18m monster…
