Manchester United will not pursue a move for AC Milan attacking midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, according to a report.
Calhanoglu has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks. The Milan star will become a free agent at the end of the season.
Therefore, rumours have emerged suggesting he could head to the Premier League for the first time in his career. Recent reports claimed that United were ready to offer a five-year contract to the Turkey international.
Milan are trying to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the season. However, there has not been much progress so far, with his agents holding out for offers from elsewhere.
Calhanoglu should have no shortage of suitors after recording 11 goals and nine assists in 2019-20. He has already scored four goals (all in the Europa League) this season.
However, it appears United will not be one of those contenders for his signature after all. According to The Athletic, they have turned down the chance to sign him.
His agents offered the Red Devils the chance to sign him after calling chief negotiator Matt Judge. However, United already have plenty of options in attacking midfield – as seen by their struggles to fit Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in the same team together.
Furthermore, summer signing Donny van de Beek is struggling to force his way into the side, and was left out of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s diamond midfield in their loss to Arsenal.
Calhanoglu can also play as a winger, but even so, it seems he is off the agenda for United. The report claims they retain confidence in their current attacking midfield options.
Fernandes confident Man Utd can solve attacking midfield problems
Speaking before their loss to Arsenal, one of United’s many current options in attacking midfield, Fernandes, insisted he can play together with Pogba.
“There is a lot of conversations about this situation and playing different formations where Bruno and Paul can play together,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if I play in the first XI or Paul plays in the first XI, if I play no. 10 or Paul plays no. 10.
“As a player you want to play, for me it doesn’t matter about the formation. The most important thing is helping the team, and if the coach thinks I need to play on the left, right, centre, no. 8 or no. 10, I have no problem playing everywhere. I can adapt to everything.”
