Gerrard handed huge Rangers boost with “world-class” beast who was vital to number 55 – opinion

Steven Gerrard was handed a huge boost at Rangers earlier this week as goalkeeper Allan McGregor signed a new contract with the club to keep him at Ibrox next season.

The 39-year-old’s previous contract was set to expire in the summer, but given how impressive the veteran has been in Gerrard’s side this season, it was always likely that he would be offered an extension.

The former Hull City man, who rejoined Rangers in the summer of 2018, has now made 388 appearances for his boyhood club, in which he has conceded just 299 goals and kept an impressive 183 clean sheets.

The shot-stopper has been in sensational form this season and has been a big reason behind Rangers’ title win, as he has conceded just eight goals in 24 Premiership appearances, with 16 clean sheets to his name.

McGregor shows no signs of slowing down at Rangers and emphasised his immense quality with a superb save in the 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague recently.

Back in 2018, after another tremendous European display in the 0-0 draw with Maribor in which he saved a last-minute penalty, Gerrard was full of praise for the ‘keeper, saying: “The save he made before the penalty was world-class, his penalty save was world-class and I think his all-round display was too.”

Given that third-choice goalkeeper Andy Firth looks set to leave the club this summer when his contract expires, it was important that Rangers kept their first-choice McGregor at the club, or else there may have been a mad rush in the summer to bring in competition for Jon McLaughlin.

McGregor has played a massive part in securing Rangers’ 55th Premiership title this season, and although it is only a one-year extension, it is undoubtedly a huge boost for Gerrard that the veteran ‘keeper will be available next season, when he will no doubt be hoping to impress again in the Premiership and the Champions League.
