Former Liverpool midfielder and prominent pundit Jamie Redknapp has highlighted a key impact new Man Utd signing Donny van de Beek will have on his club.
The Dutchman, 23, put pen to paper on a five-year-deal worth an initial £35m earlier this week.
The move has been roundly praised as a smart piece of business, though questions over squad selection have emerged.
With superstar midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba all playing in similar positions to Van de Beek, fitting the trio together could become a difficult puzzle to solve for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this year.
Regardless, ex-Liverpool star Redknapp believes the signing is a “great addition” for The Red Devils, and pointed to their greater strength in depth as a huge boost to the club.
“Van de Beek is a great addition and I think he will prove to be a great signing for Manchester United,” Redknapp told Sky Sports’ The Transfer Show.
“In the current climate, the transfer fee doesn’t seem extortionate either.
“He’s an exciting player and one that knows the game. He learned the right way at Ajax, where the basics of football is instilled at a very young age. The game is easy for him.
“He will also be a great addition to the squad, one that means United can rotate in midfield, keep players fresh and ensure there is quality in all areas.”
Van de Beek was La Liga-bound?
Meanwhile, Van de Beek was reportedly heading for Real Madrid before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, says his agent.
Arsenal, Barcelona and Juventus were also chasing the 23-year-old, but Madrid were leading the pack until the world was hit by coronavirus.
As long ago as January, reliable Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf claimed that van de Beek would be joining Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid in the summer.
The outlet’s chief sports writer, Valentijn Driessen, told Veronica Inside (via Goal.com) of the impending transfer, saying: “You can write that down [the Van de Beek to Real Madrid transfer being done]. It’s all settled. It’s done.”
