Arteta backs ‘really competitive’ Arsenal squad to be able to challenge for every trophy this season

Mikel Arteta has backed his strong Arsenal squad to be able to challenge for multiple trophies this season, after a positive start to the 2020/21 campaign.

The Gunners have a looked a much-improved outfit under Arteta in recent months and came out 1-0 winners over Manchester United at the weekend after an excellent display, with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netting the decisive goal from the penalty spot to end his mini-goal drought.

That victory made it four wins from seven in the Premier League so far this season for Arsenal, while they’ve also made a strong start to their Europa League and Carabao Cup campaign, with Arteta’s men already into the quarter-final stage of the latter competition.

Having lifted the FA Cup last season and the subsequent Community Shield, the Spaniard’s brief reign has already brought with it silverware and Arteta believes his competitive squad are well capable of challenging on all fronts this season.

“I think now we have the numbers to do that,” Arteta said at his pre-match press conference. “I think we can rotate players.

“I think we have enough players in the squad to be able to maintain a really competitive squad. We’re playing every three or four days at the moment and you start to get injuries, suspensions and whatever comes is going to get more and more complicated.

“This is our obligation, to try to compete in every competition and we’re going to be trying to do that until the end. Obviously, the circumstances will dictate how well we can do that.”

The former Arsenal captain was also asked whether the side’s current success can be put down to him, although he was quick to place the responsibility on his player’s shoulders, while also underlying his role to get the best out of his squad.

“No, it’s down to the players on how they perform and what they are able to achieve and do on the football pitch,” he insisted.

“I’m just here, another piece around the club to help them achieve as much as possible. To give them confidence, to pass onto them my idea of how we have to play, how we have to live together, how I understand this profession and I know how complicated it is.

“It’s been almost 11 months, almost four of them sitting at home, for the first job I think it’s very special circumstances and I think we have tried to manage it in the best possible way.”
