Tottenham star admits ‘possibility exists’ that he could rejoin former club

Sergio Reguilon has admitted there is a chance he could return to Real Madrid, which he describes as his “home”.

Reguilon was born in Madrid before coming through the academy ranks at the Bernabeu. He made his senior debut in October 2018, before spending last season on loan at Sevilla.

During his time there, he became a Europa League winner, but he could still not dislodge Marcelo from the starting lineup when he returned to the Bernabeu.

Therefore, Madrid allowed him to leave this summer – and Tottenham came calling.

As part of a double deal which also saw them bring back Gareth Bale on loan, Tottenham signed Reguilon to a five-year contract. He has already made seven appearances for his new club.

However, there remains a chance that Reguilon will not fulfil his five years of contract, as Madrid have a buyback clause to re-sign him should they wish.

There have already been claims that such a deal could be activated as early as summer 2021. By that time, there will be just one year left on the contract of Marcelo – who has been struggling to recapture his best form this season.

Ferland Mendy is another option for Zinedine Zidane at left-back, but the Madrid boss could turn to Reguilon if his problems continue.

The 23-year-old has already responded by saying his focus is fully on Tottenham, where he believes he can win trophies.

Now, Reguilon has reflected further on his decision to leave Madrid for Tottenham – which he feels was the right step for his development at present.

He told Cadena Ser: “I didn’t have any chat with the coach, it was more with the club. I knew what they think of my work, but I had to make a decision.

“And time will tell. I didn’t ask for any explanation, I don’t think it was convenient for me to go to ask for an explanation.

“Everyone has their tastes. At my age, I had to play and keep competing.

“Madrid is my home and where I have grown up and they have given me everything. The future is not known but that possibility exists.”

Reguilon notices Bale change

Reguilon and Bale have both made an impact since joining Tottenham from Madrid. The latter had fallen out of favour under Zidane in recent years, and much was made of his apparent preference for playing golf compared to playing for the La Liga giants.

Now, Bale is back enjoying his football at Spurs. He scored his first goal since returning in a win over Brighton at the weekend.

And Reguilon says his teammate is happier to be back in the Premier League.

“He seems different to me,” Reguilon added. “The language is everything for him.

“He speaks Spanish well, it’s not bad, a bit like me in English, but communication, the habits, mean he’s happier in England. I have no idea if he’ll return (to Madrid).”
