Liverpool find defensive answer as Juventus name price for colossus

Liverpool are reported to be considering an approach for Merih Demiral amid claims Juventus have put the no-nonsense defender up for sale.

The Reds have been tipped to bring in defensive reinforcements since both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez were ruled out long term.

Jurgen Klopp has hinted that he may dip into the market, particularly with Joel Matip also adding to his issues at the back.

Indeed, the Reds boss opted to start Jordan Henderson alongside Fabinho at the heart of defence against Southampton on Monday night.

A number of names have been mentioned as targets, with Torino star Gleison Bremer tipped as one of the latest to be linked.

RB Salzburg’s Maximilian Wober has also been mentioned as a potential target.

However, reports in Turkey state Liverpool could look to change direction altogether. That’s after Fanatik claimed the Reds had been alerted by claims that Demiral had been told he can leave Juventus.

While the Turkey international would not come cheap, it’s reported he’s been told he can leave for €45m (£40.6m). That fee may well be more than Liverpool were willing to spend this month. However, the chance to land the Turkish colossus could be too good for Klopp and Co to ignore.

The 22-year-old has started just six Serie A games this season. However, reports that he can leave the Allianz Stadium will come as something of a surprise.

Demiral has 13 caps for his country and is regarded as one of the best young defenders in world football.

His potential sale, however, won’t just alert Liverpool though. Fanatik claims news of his potential sale will also alert Leicester and Tottenham, both of whom have been linked in the past.

Klopp sits on fence over January targets

Klopp, meanwhile, has played down the likelihood he will utilise the January transfer window to ease his problems in central defence – but did drop the smallest hint he could look to spend.

However, Klopp’s assertion “not all clubs have real money” and “doing ‘something’ makes no sense” suggests the Reds boss is happy to continue with the options he has at his disposal. That is, unless, a gilt-edged opportunity arises.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said it was “paramount” they signed a centre-back this month.

Klopp, however, is reluctant to spend just for the sake of it.

“We have solutions in the squad obviously but we struggled still with injuries,” said Klopp.

“For most of the time with centre-half position. It can happen like this when it starts and does not stop.

“So we have solutions in the squad, and if we can, or if we will do something in the winter, I just don’t know.

“It is a very difficult transfer window as you can imagine. Not all of the clubs have real money.

“Doing something makes no sense. Doing the right thing makes sense. So far we have really liked what we have done.

“I liked Nat (in Wednesday’s goalless draw at Newcastle).

“He is a clever boy and knows about his ability. He is using it and doing the job and helped us a lot.

“We have three centre-halves and if Rhys had played Nat would not have played for five or six weeks. He needed to get this out of his system.”
