Newcastle deal to impact Wolves as star appears on Spanish giants’ wish list

An impending Newcastle transfer could affect Wolves as one of their stars has reportedly appeared on a club’s wish list.

Bruno Lage’s men sit eighth in the Premier League table after 19 matches. They have won on eight occasions and have one of the best defensive records in the league, second only to Manchester City.

Wolves’ most recent outing was an impressive 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

They frustrated the home side before taking the lead with less than 10 minutes remaining. Joao Moutinho took a good touch on the edge of the box before beating David de Gea on the half volley.

Wanderers are in a good place to achieve a top-10 finish, although they will need to improve their scoring output.

Their top scorer is Hwang Hee-chan, who is on just four goals so far this season.

Sport Witness, who cite Spanish outlet Marca, claim one Wolves man is a target for Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side are preparing to lose Kieran Trippier. The England right-back is close to joining Newcastle for £15m.

The Spanish outfit apparently want to replace Trippier with 28-year-old Nelson Semedo.

He has been on their radar since 2019, when Barcelona were looking to sell. Atletico eventually opted to bring in Trippier from Tottenham, with Semedo instead joining Wolves.

But the interest remains and the reigning La Liga champions could submit an offer before the transfer window shuts on January 31.

According to the report, the main stumbling block for Atletico is Semedo’s price tag. Wolves would want to recoup most of the £37million they paid for him.

Despite this, the chances of a deal are boosted by Atletico’s relationship with Jorge Mendes. He represents Semedo, alongside plenty of other Premier League stars, and could broker a deal.

Wolves sign Japan international

Meanwhile, Wanderers have announced the arrival of Hayao Kawabe from Swiss outfit Grasshopper Club Zurich.

He is an exciting central attacking midfielder who has won four caps for Japan, scoring one goal.

The deal is worth £500,000, as per The Athletic, with Kawabe penning a three-and-a-half-year contract at Molineux.

On the move, Wolves technical director Scott Sellars said: “Naturally, Hayao is a player we’ve watched a lot and he’s done really well this season.

“He’s very energetic, very busy, and has good quality. He’s really shone at Grasshoppers this year, and he’s one of the main reasons they’re doing so well.”

Kawabe will spend Switzerland’s winter break at Wolves before re-joining Grasshopper on loan for the rest of the campaign.
