Arsenal have been joined in the battle for the Bruno Guimaraes transfer by two other Premier League clubs, according to a report.
Guimaraes is someone Arsenal have had their eyes on for a while. They looked at him before he switched Athletico Paranaense for Lyon in January 2020. Thanks to his performances for the French club since, he remains on their radar.
In fact, reports last week suggested they were in talks over a transfer for the midfielder.
The situation may not be that advanced, according to the latest from the Evening Standard, but there is an interest there.
It is reiterated that Arsenal are long-term admirers of Guimaraes. They want to snap him up at some point this year if possible.
But the report reveals that Everton and Newcastle United are also looking into a potential move for Guimaraes. In fact, the two Premier League clubs have been watching him.
At present, no suitor has made a concrete offer. However, they could try their luck despite Lyon’s high demands.
The Ligue 1 outfit want to double their £17m investment in Guimaraes – at least. In fact, their asking price could be around £40m. The fact that they will owe a sell-on fee of around 20% to Athletico Paranaense is behind their hopes for a high sum.
They feel they can hold on to him until the summer, so it may be tough to tempt them to cash in during the January transfer window.
The Brazilian is under contract with Lyon until 2024. He has made 22 appearances for them so far this season, providing five assists.
Lyon are now hoping he can conclude it with them, but there are three English clubs circling who could test their resolve.
Newcastle, Arsenal not just embroiled in Bruno Guimaraes transfer saga
While competing for the same player, Newcastle and Arsenal could be involved in a more direct transfer saga.
A report has claimed that Newcastle have listed four Arsenal players as transfer options in their widespread search for January signings.
The Telegraph carry a report which details all of the first, second and third choice targets the club have for each position.
And among that extensive group of players is a quartet of Gunners stars.
Having fallen out with Mikel Arteta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has already been linked with St James’ Park. Indeed, he has been considered.
However, his wages and Africa Cup of Nations absence mean he is an ‘unlikely’ signing for Eddie Howe.
Fellow striker Eddie Nketiah could be on the move north, though. His name features prominently on the list of replacements for the injured Callum Wilson.
More options are set to explored in that department. Wilson’s calf issue has thrown a spanner in the previously comprehensive plans.
With defence the priority, any midfield acquisition for Newcastle would likely be a loan deal. A potential in that regard is Mohamed Elneny.
Elneny has been scouted ‘extensively’ and could be available having flirted with the Emirates exit door in recent windows.
The final Arsenal man the Toon are eyeing up is centre-back Rob Holding. Having nearly secured the signing of Kieran Trippier, that position is the next they will focus on.
