United States’ woes mount as Weston McKennie sent home & Sergino Dest ruled out of Honduras clash

The United States national team have this evening released a statement, confirming a pair of blows on the personnel front.

Successive stalemates

Gregg Berhalter’s men of course got the nation’s road to the 2022 World Cup underway in altogether unconvincing fashion over the course of the last week.

In their first of a trio of qualifiers across the international break, the States first made the trip to The Estadio Cuscatlan, for a meeting with El Salvador.

An alarmingly underwhelming display, however, ultimately culminated in both sides being forced to settle for a share of the spoils, in a 0-0 stalemate.

Next up came a highly anticipated showdown with rivals Canada on Sunday night.

Berhalter and co., though, again flattered to deceive, on their way to a 1-1 draw, and just two points from an available six to open their qualifying campaign.

This leaves the ‘Stars and Stripes’ a full four points adrift of early table-toppers Mexico in the CONCACAF standings.

McKennie & Dest to miss out

And, as outlined above, on Monday, the country’s woes have only mounted.

Taking to social media, the US released a statement, providing an insight into the latest personnel news stemming from Gregg Berhalter’s squad.

First up was confirmation that star midfielder Weston McKennie will not be involved when his side round out their latest set of fixtures in a crunch meeting with Honduras on Wednesday.

Juventus talent McKennie was forced to sit out yesterday’s action at the Nissan Stadium, after admitting to violating the States’ Covid-19 protocols:

And, speaking this evening, boss Berhalter confirmed that:

‘Weston will return to Italy and will be unavailable for the match against Honduras due to a violation of team policy.’

McKennie, though, is not the only key member of the country’s setup set to miss out versus Honduras.

The other? Sergino Dest.

Barcelona stopper Dest was forced off late in the first-half versus Canada on Sunday, after picking up a fitness problem. And, in turn, it has since been revealed that:

‘Sergino Dest has been diagnosed with a right ankle sprain and will not be available for the game against Honduras.’
