Bouy and Ideguchi 2.0: Leeds doing starlet no favours by repeating loan mistake – opinion

Earlier this week it was reported that Mateusz Bogusz would be sent out on loan for the 2020/21 season.

As per Football Insider’s story, the Polish midfielder was expected to move to an EFL club in either League One or League Two, but he has actually ended up moving somewhere else entirely.

Indeed, reports emerged on deadline day that Bogusz was set to join UD Logrones in Spain’s second division for the upcoming season, a move which ended up being confirmed late on Monday. However, that just doesn’t seem like the type of deal that will aid his development.

A loan to League One or Two would’ve provided him with the perfect platform to get to grips with the speed and intensity of the English game, albeit at a lower level, but a move to Segunda Division may not be what he needs.

You would’ve thought that Leeds would’ve learnt their lesson about loaning players to this league and how little it does to aid their development.

United’s close relationship with Cultural Leonesa saw the likes of Ouasim Bouy and Yosuke Ideguchi go out on loan to Spain’s second tier over the past few years, while Hadi Sacko plied his trade for Las Palmas for a season back in 2018/19 and none of those three have made a single appearance for Leeds since returning from those loan moves, with Ideguchi and Sacko being sold not long after coming back.

A temporary spell to Spain’s second tier has been more of a death sentence than a launching pad for players’ careers at Leeds United in recent years, so why on earth are the Whites persevering with this strategy when it has failed so many times before?

It’s not even as if Bogusz will be closer to home in Spain, it’s still a long way from Poland and he’s never played in that country before.

This is a deal that makes very little sense, and we can only hope that it doesn’t hamper Bogusz’s development too much.
