Thomas Partey has written an open letter to fans of Atletico Madrid after his surprise, last-gasp move to Arsenal on Monday.
Despite being long-term admirers of Partey Arsenal were not expected to get a deal done for the midfielder due to his €50m release clause.
However, on Monday afternoon it transpired that Arsenal had signalled their intention to pay the buyout clause.
Goal’s Charles Watts reported Arsenal had made their move for the player, despite talkSPORT and the Daily Mirror claiming the deal was dead.
The £45m deal is believed to have angered Atletico with Diario AS saying the LaLiga club are angry over how the deal was conducted.
Apparently neither Arsenal or the player himself informed Atletico about the transfer.
Instead, Atleti only found out about the deal from LaLiga, who received payment of the €50m release clause from the player’s legal team at the league’s HQ in Madrid.
Atleti were unable to stop the transfer once the buyout clause was matched, making them irrelevant in the deal.
The Ghana star has penned a long-term deal at the Emirates after he completed his medical and paperwork just before Monday’s 11pm deadline.
And on Tuesday he released a statement on Instagram

Gracias
“Dear Atletico fans, today I only have words of gratitude for you,” Partey wrote on his Instagram account.
“For several years now, Atlético de Madrid has been my home and a part of this family will always be with me.
“I want to thank the club for the trust they have placed in me from the first day, but above all, I want to thank you and your wonderful support that accepted me from the first moment and that has shown that they are with me in both the good times and the bad.
“They truly never stop believing. Atlético de Madrid is not just a club, it is a family. Thank you.”
Meanwhile, Leganes have pocketed an unexpected fee of €5m from the transfer.
Leganes held 10% of the player’s rights and had sold a further 40% to Atleti back in 2017 for a fee of €6m, so they have made a grand total of €11m from the player over the years.
