Murtough must sanction Man Utd swoop for £114k-p/w dynamo, he has “incredible quality” – opinion

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic as the club plans for life without Paul Pogba.

What’s the story?

The Red Devils are believed to be in the market for further engine room operators as uncertainty surrounding the futures of Pogba and Donny van de Beek continues to grow.

And according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Brozovic has now emerged as a potential target for United, with the 28-year-old having been a key figure in Inter’s 2020/21 Serie A title success.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges would be able to snap up the Croatia international on a free transfer next summer as the technically gifted maestro approaches the end of his current contract at San Siro, meaning an imminent exit could be on the cards.

John Murtough must swoop

Brozovic has established himself as one of Inter’s key stars since his arrival on an initial loan deal back in January 2015, scoring 25 goals and providing 33 assists in 251 appearances for the Nerazzurri.

He played a pivotal part in the San Siro outfit’s first Serie A title success in ten years last season, achieving an impressive 7.03 WhoScored rating for his 33 league outings.

The experienced campaigner recorded 1.6 tackles per game in 2020/21, 1.2 interceptions and 1.4 key passes, placing him in the top five for each metric when compared to his teammates, highlighting his outstanding ability both with and without the ball.

But Brozovic has long been a top-class performer. After putting in several eye-catching displays earlier in his career, former Inter boss Roberto Mancini lauded his prized asset, saying: “If Brozovic were to continue like this, he would become one of the best.

“We don’t want to sell him, even if faced with a great offer. He must work, but he has incredible quality.”

However, it appears Brozovic’s time with the Italian giants is nearing the end following a successful stint in Milan, and United’s football director John Murtough must sanction a swoop.

Securing the £114k-per-week Croatian on a free transfer would represent an extremely astute piece of business for the Red Devils chief, ensuring the Old Trafford outfit’s midfield remains strong and leaving enough funds for Solskjaer to strengthen in other areas of the pitch.
