Celtic slipped back into their inconsistent ways after Sparta Prague made easy work of brushing them aside in their latest Europa League clash. Neil Lennon’s men were bowled over by the Czech side, who hit the Hoops for four goals amid a defensive disaster.
One man in particular who disappointed the manager was Brighton loanee Shane Duffy, who delivered yet another lacklustre display across the backline.
This is now the fourth poor performance since the Rangers loss that Duffy, who earns £40,000-per-week, has put in for Celtic. It will certainly have Lennon looking at his options and wondering how he can change his lineup moving forwards.
Shane Duffy disappointed in Celtic vs Sparta Prague
Celtic’s Europa League run so far has left a lot to be desired. They are currently rooted to the bottom of their group, with just the one point on the board so far. The Hoops have conceded the most goals in Group H, having shipped nine since the campaign started.
A lot of responsibility falls on the defence, who have been extremely irregular with their performances across all competitions this season. Duffy in particular could be looking at being dropped to the bench as Lennon desperately continues his search for a winning combination.
According to Sofascore, the Brighton man lost possession 13 times at centre-back and failed to complete 64% of his attempted long balls. He made a total of 45 passes in a 90 minute appearance but gave away a foul and was also dribbled past on one occasion.
This is similar to his performance against Lille, where he gave away a penalty and made just 23 accurate passes.
Unless Lennon wants to see this term’s title sway in favour of Rangers, he must buck up and make some cut-throat decisions. Duffy’s run of poor displays warrant him to be dropped against Motherwell on Sunday. Despite having two games in-hand, the Hoops are now behind Gers by nine points, which will not be sitting well with the team.
