Positive Covid-19 test five days ahead of Euros
Spain’s preparations for Euro 2020 have been thrown into chaos following a positive Covid test in their camp.
Defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets returned a positive test result on Sunday morning, a post on the national team website read.
Although they have since taken all measures to prevent it from spreading any further, it throws Busquets’, now Spain’s captain, participation in their opening match into severe doubt.
Moreover, anyone deemed to have been within close proximity to the Barcelona man may well be sweating on their own eligibility for the first group game against Sweden in eight days.
Luis Enrique’s side were due to play a second friendly match against Lithuania on Tuesday evening. However, this will now be played by their under 21 side, who were knocked out in the semi-final stage of their European Championships.
The Spanish federation have also agreed to refund match-goers completely if they decide not to go, or by 20% if they decide to watch the U21 side anyway.
The full statement reads:
The RFEF regrets to announce that its captain Sergio Busquets has given a positive result in the last PCR test that was carried out this morning at the concentration of the national team in Las Rozas. The rest of the members of the concentration have all tested negative.
The Federation’s medical services have adopted all the necessary measures in a case of these characteristics in accordance with the protocols established by both the Ministry of Health and UEFA, so that the footballer has abandoned the concentration in a medicalized vehicle.
Both the workers and the close contacts of the player will remain isolated for prevention in the concentration of the National Team and personalized training routines will be activated, maintaining the isolation, to continue with the preparation of the European.
The appropriate sports measures will be evaluated soon depending on the evolution of the captain of the national team.
Regarding the second friendly match against Lithuania, it will be held under the direction of Luis De la Fuente and with members of the Under 21 National Team.
The RFEF will fully refund the amount of the ticket to all those who wish it and communicate it before 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. In the same way, it will refund 20% of it, to those who do decide to attend the game in Butarque.
In addition, all communication and marketing events scheduled for tomorrow at the Las Rozas Media Center are canceled.
24-man squad a mistake?
All eyes were on Luis Enrique to name his Spain squad for the Euros, and there were more than a few raised eyebrows when he opted to take just 24 of a possible 26 players, dropping national team captain Sergio Ramos in the process.
Busquets is now potentially out for the group stages of the Euros, and may well not be the only one, although only time will tell. This turn of events could well stretch the 24 man squad to its limits, and leave many wondering why 26 were not chosen, as every other nation has done.
