Real Madrid star rejected move to Tottenham this summer to fight for place

Tottenham and Real Madrid’s strong relationship

Tottenham and Real Madrid have, in recent years, had a strong relationship when it comes to transfers between the clubs. Luka Modric and Gareth Bale both left north London for the Spanish capital, while on their part Spurs signed Bale back. as well as Sergio Reguilon from Los Blancos last summer.

In general, the relationship has worked well, with Reguilon having a buy-back clause inserted into his deal which Real Madrid can exercise any time. Bale too has spoken of the upside of spending the season on loan back in north London, which has allowed him to rediscover his love of football previously lost.

Asensio rejects the Lilywhites

One player not keen to make the move to the white half of north London, however, was 25-year-old winger Marco Asensio. Widely considered one of the world’s top talents just three years ago, his career has hit a roadblock somewhat, with 35 appearances last campaign returning just 5 goals.

In turn, Spanish publication Marca report that Spurs, as well as Italian side AC Milan, made a play for his signature this summer. However, the Spaniard rejected the opportunity to depart the Santiago Bernabeu, instead opting to stay and fight for his place.

And his stubbornness may well have paid dividends, with Ancelotti debating moving Asensio more centrally for the upcoming season on the back of Martin Odegaard’s departure.

For their part, Spurs found their attacking reinforcement in fellow Spaniard Bryan Gil, who joined the club from Sevilla. But could they have done with Asensio too?
