Havertz’s Chelsea stint
Chelsea’s marquee signing of the delayed summer transfer window came in the form of Kai Havertz.
The then-20-year-old had been a rising star in the Bundesliga for several years, and looked primed to grow into one of Europe’s elite attackers.
So, it wasn’t too surprising to see Bayer Leverkusen demand £71m from Chelsea, to part with their best player.
Since making the move to England, though, Havertz has had a fairly mixed stint
Under Frank Lampard, Havertz struggled to fit into the Blues’ system, and was also forced to deal with a bout of Covid-19 early in his Chelsea career.
With Thomas Tuchel at the helm, however, Havertz has improved a great deal.
The forward has already cemented himself in Chelsea’s history books by scoring the winning goal in the 2020/21 Champions League final and has continued to look sharp so far this term as well.
Havertz on Kovacic
Now, in a recent interview, Havertz has been speaking about a player who has helped him a lot whilst at Chelsea.
That man is Mateo Kovacic, who Havertz claims he has a very good relationship with:
“One of the players that helps me a lot for example was Kova. I had from day one a very good relationship with him.
“He’s a different character of playing football. But I think we share the same understanding of football.
“Before the game, a very calm person and for me this is good sometimes to be next to somebody that is very calm.”
The German would also explain that Kovacic is like a hero because of his desire to want the ball:
“He is like a hero because he always wants the ball. Even when maybe we concede a goal he is always the first one to take the ball and in doing that he gives us a lot of confidence.
“He is very young and won three Champions League titles. He is a player that likes a lot of movement, is quick on the ball. It’s good for a team like us. It’s good to have someone like him at Chelsea.”
