Liverpool will be happy to lose £30k-p/w Edwards disaster certain to leave this summer – opinion

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has found himself firmly as third-choice this season and if reports from The Athletic are true, the Spaniard looks ‘certain to leave’ Anfield this summer.

Liverpool correspondent James Pearce suggested in a recent article for The Athletic that the former West Ham man will depart the Reds at the end of the current campaign, after falling behind Caoimhin Kelleher as back-up ‘keeper in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

A nightmare display by the 34-year-old in Liverpool’s 7-2 defeat against Aston Villa was perhaps the final nail in the coffin for Adrian, who has unfortunately been extremely error-prone in his appearances for the Reds.

Since joining on a free transfer in the summer of 2019, the shot-stopper has gone on to make 23 appearances for the Reds, conceding 35 goals and keeping just five clean sheets.

It is no surprise that Kelleher has moved ahead of him in the pecking order, therefore, as the young Irishman has managed four clean sheets in just nine senior appearances for Liverpool.

Considering Adrian reportedly earns as much as £30k per week with Liverpool, it could definitely be described as a rare mistake from Michael Edwards to have brought him in. Unfortunately, he has struggled throughout his time at Anfield, and they may have been better placing their faith in Kelleher from the beginning.

Although it was a promising start for the Spaniard when he impressed in Liverpool’s penalty shootout Super Cup win against Chelsea, with Klopp praising him after the game, it has arguably been downhill ever since.

Fortunately for the Reds, the Spaniard’s contract is set to expire in the summer and it is hard to see him being offered a new deal, which will surely bring an end to what has arguably been a nightmare two years on Merseyside for the experienced ‘keeper.
