Newcastle are looking to make a statement signing with a move for a Real Madrid attacker next summer, while Sunday’s transfer gossip claims that Mike Ashley wants to take over a struggling Championship club.
STATEMENT SIGNING ON NEWCASTLE’S RADAR
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, the Toon are drawing up a list of big-name players to sign next summer, with Bale a major candidate as he looks to leave Real on a free in 2022.
Newcastle are expected to spend big following their £305million takeover by Saudi Public Investment Fund.
Bale would certainly be a headline addition, with the Wales star enduring a topsy turvy time at the Bernabeu.
The 32-year-old has scored 106 goals and added 68 assists in 254 appearances for Real, after leaving Tottenham in 2013.
However, he has often been held back by injury concerns and spent last season back in England on loan at Spurs.
That spell went relatively well, with Bale notching 16 goals in 34 games in all competitions, to show that he can still do a job in the Premier League.
So far this season, Bale has scored just once in three appearances under Carlo Ancelotti. But he is currently on the sidelines again after suffering a hamstring tear.
At this stage, it appears highly unlikely that the winger will be offered a new Real contract – so clubs outside of Spain can discuss a pre-contract agreement from January.
To that end, Newcastle are expected to be among a number of clubs who will try and sign Bale.
