Memphis Depay has said he was furious at the tackle from Jordan Pickford which has left Virgil van Dijk’s season in tatters.
Van Dijk’s Holland team-mate said he wanted to use words he could not repeat after watching the England keeper’s knee-high challenge on the the Liverpool man.
The result was the talismanic Liverpool defender tearing his ACL and now facing several months on the sidelines.
Liverpool have always refused to put a timescale on the player’s recovery, but did confirm recently that his surgery had been successful.
With suggestions Van Dijk could return before the end of the season, David Ornstein claimed recently that the damager could be worse than first thought.
“It’s my understanding – and I stress, that’s just my information, it’s not official – that the damage to Virgil van Dijk’s right knee is perhaps worse than initially feared and extends beyond the ACL,” he told the Tifo Football podcast.
“I’m no medical expert so it’s unfair to speculate further or give greater detail.”
Memphis though says he was left seething when he saw Pickford’s challenge.
“At first I didn’t see the tackle myself,” Depay told FOX Sports. “I have to say I saw him walk off the field and when I saw the replays after that, I did use some words that I can’t repeat. How you can injure someone like that? That’s bizarre for me.
“I’ll leave it at that, it’s very disappointing. It hurts the whole team, including everyone around him. And of course most of all for him.”
Wijnaldum confident Van Dijk will recover
“What can I say? We can only support him,” he added. “I’ve walked that route, I know what it feels like. I’m here for him.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has backed Van Dijk to come back stronger.
“It’s one of the toughest injuries for any athlete to come back from,” Wijnaldum told VI.
“Virgil will return with God’s will,” Wijnaldum said. “It is a difficult time for him; this is the worst thing you can experience as a football player.
“You go through hell. But I think he is very strong. We FaceTime every now and then and that is very nice.”
