Tottenham are reportedly leading the race for RB Leipzig winger Marcel Sabitzer, who could be on the move next summer.
Sabitzer has developed into a key player since joining Leipzig in 2014. Only two players have made more appearances for the relatively young club than him.
Tottenham became aware of what he could do when they lost to Leipzig in last season’s Champions League. His goal knocked Spurs out of the competition.
Since that day, Sabitzer has been linked with a move to the London club. He has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League and said he has “nothing to rule out” when asked about Tottenham’s interest back in April.
Now, SportBILD (via Sport Witness) claim that Tottenham have reignited their interest in Sabitzer. They are “above everyone” in the race to sign the Austrian.
Sabitzer is out of contract in 2022, and Leipzig are likely to sell him before then. They will be looking for a fee of around €30m to let him go.
It would cost too much for Leipzig to extend Sabitzer’s contract, hence their decision to consider letting him leave. His price tag has dropped significantly since Tottenham’s interest first emerged back in March.
Last season was the most prolific of Sabitzer’s career. He scored 16 goals in all competitions – the first time he has reached double figures in a season.
Sabitzer has previously suggested it would be “fun” to play in the Premier League, having never done so in his career to date.
Defender to leave Tottenham in summer
Meanwhile, reports elsewhere indicate that one player is unlikely to ever play for Tottenham again.
Jose Mourinho has a large squad at his disposal, and cannot find room for everyone who would like to play.
Therefore, one defender will have to move on in the summer.
