Nuno’s nightmare: Wolves suffer a devastating blow to “special” £27m-rated workhorse – opinion

Wolverhampton Wanderers appear to have suffered a cruel blow during this international break as one of Nuno Santo’s regulars has seemingly suffered an injury.

According to Het Nieuwsblad, Belgium, and Old Gold, midfielder Leander Dendoncker is a doubt for their upcoming matches against England and Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.

The 25-year-old hobbled off during the first half against Switzerland earlier this week, where he was replaced by Leicester City maestro Youri Tielemans, and the report claims it is down to “groin and knee pain.”

Dendoncker played 57 times for the Midlands outfit last season alone, starting 32 of 38 Premier League matches, and his importance to Nuno has continued into the current campaign where he has featured in all but one of their top-flight outings.

The midfield enforcer, who’s valued at €30m (£27m), has averaged at least 1.8 tackles in both of his last two seasons and has seen an increase to one key pass per game this campaign, via WhoScored.

It leaves the Portuguese boss light on options in the middle – the obvious choice will be the currently unfavoured Joao Moutinho alongside Ruben Neves whilst summer loan signing Vitinha may get consideration.

Dendoncker is just as important to the Red Devils too after Roberto Martinez lauded him as “special” during last month’s international break.

Whilst Nuno believes his key man is a “fantastic footballer and [a] hard worker” who “gives us so much” – so to lose him for any period of time is a devastating and killer blow to their likely fortunes.

Wolves host Southampton at Molineux in a week’s time and that could prove too early for the engine room monster should the aforementioned report prove to be true.

The Midlands outfit were thrashed 4-0 by West Ham in his only absence this season.
