Premier League outfit Arsenal have added the name of AZ Alkmaar star Teun Koopmeiners to the club’s transfer shortlist, according to reports.
Maddison amongst those linked
The subject of potential midfield reinforcements at the Emirates has taken centre stage in the media chatter since the opening of the summer transfer window last month.
This comes as Mikel Arteta eyes up the addition of some much needed fresh faces to his side’s ranks in the middle of the park.
To this point, the vast majority of the Gunners’ links have been to midfielders of the attacking variety, on the back of Martin Odegaard’s return to Real Madrid.
The likes of James Maddison, Nabil Fekir, Houssem Aouar and Emi Buendia (who has since joined Premier League rivals Aston Villa) have all been tipped as potential arrivals in North London ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.
AZ star eyed
The latest midfield talent to have been added to Arsenal’s wish-list, though, generally lines out in a deeper position to those mentioned above, meaning he is likely being considered as a potential partner for Thomas Partey at the base of the club’s midfield.
The player in question? Teun Koopmeiners.
AZ Alkmaar standout Koopmeiners has long been viewed as one of the Eredivisie’s finest.
The 23-year-old boasts a whole host of impressive traits, combining ability both on and off the ball, to form the package of a near-complete modern-day midfielder.
Perfectly summing up Koopmeiners’ talents is the fact that, despite his deep-lying position on the pitch (the Dutchman can even line out as a central defender when required), the AZ youth product managed to rack up a head-turning 17 goals and 7 assists across all competitions last season.
And such production, in turn, has evidently piqued the attentions of those in a position of power at the Emirates.
As per a report from Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Arsenal are one of a number of clubs ‘preying’ on Koopmeiners, alongside the likes of Stade Rennais, Atalanta, AS Roma and Premier League rivals Brighton.
Significantly, though, it is added that the player himself, capped once by the Netherlands, is a lifelong fan of the Gunners, handing Arteta and co. a potential edge in the race for his signature.
It now remains to be seen whether a formal proposal is forthcoming on the part of the Londoners.
