Luke Shaw reveals how he feels about Alex Telles joining Man Utd

Luke Shaw admits he will have to work hard to fight for his place at Manchester United following the arrival of Alex Telles.

United signed Telles from Porto towards the end of the transfer window to add sterner competition in Shaw’s left-back position. Telles will likely be first choice once he settles in.

The Brazilian has won two league titles with Porto, as well as one in Turkey with Galatasaray earlier in his career. Naturally, he will arrive at Old Trafford with big pedigree.

Shaw has been United’s main left-back for the past couple of seasons, playing 40 times in 2018-19 and 33 last season. However, his position is now clearly under threat.

Despite this, the England international welcomes the new competition for places in the Red Devils starting XI.

“Competition for any team is a must,” he told ManUtd.com. “There is competition for every single spot and you’ve got to be ready for it, work hard and give the manager a decision harder than what he’s had to make before.

“Like I said, competition is very healthy for the squad, it’ll push everyone even more because everyone wants to play.”

Shaw prepared for ‘must-win game’

United need to get back on track after a difficult start to the season, most recently having lost 6-1 to Tottenham. It has left them in the bottom half of the Premier League table after their first three games.

Next up for United is a trip to Newcastle, who have won two of their four league games this season. And Shaw admits the squad are eager to get going again.

“It is one we all want to play in,” he said. “We all hoped it would be a bit earlier, to be honest, as the last game wasn’t good.

“We’ve had a lot of time to think and work and be ready for this. We need to win it. It’s a must-win game and we want to put things right.

“We’ve got very important games coming up. Everyone is looking forward to working hard so we’re going to be ready for it.

“We know it’s time to work hard and even work harder than ever. We know the results haven’t been great recently and we need to get back to what we used to be.

“We’re working very hard to bring back that intensity we had, as we very much need to push on after this international break.”
