Shane Duffy hasn’t been living up to expectations since he joined Celtic during the summer window. Despite contributing two goals and one assist, his defensive performances haven’t been up to scratch, particularly of late.
According to Sofascore, his last five appearances for the Hoops have been below the 6.6 rating mark, which is very disappointing for a player of Duffy’s calibre. His most recent display for the Republic of Ireland also left a lot to be desired, shipping three goals to international rivals England.
It’s fair to say that his chances of securing a permanent deal with Celtic are slim after his recent performances. Unlike fellow loanee Mohamed Elyounoussi, who the club will surely be bending over backwards to sign.
Duffy has disappointed Bielsa
Duffy was particularly lacklustre against Sparta Prague, a match the Bhoys lost 4-1 on home soil. The centre-back lost possession 13 times and was dribbled past once, he also failed to complete seven of his 11 attempted long balls (via Sofascore). This was seemingly the reason behind Lennon’s decision to drop the 28-year-old in their most recent match against Motherwell.
Curiously, Celtic went on to deliver a convincing 4-1 win over their Premiership opposition, banking a much-needed three points as they chase down Rangers.
The Hoops released long-time serving centre-back Jozo Simunovic over the summer, which is a decision that fans didn’t take lightly. Many are wishing they still had the Croatia international in the ranks as opposed to signing Duffy on loan. Having lost the fans and seemingly the manager’s faith, the Brighton man is making a right mess of his chance with Celtic.
The £40,000 per week disappointment is now starting to make Nick Hammond’s decision to release Simunovic look foolish, as it looks like they will be back in the market for yet another centre-back once Duffy returns to the Premier League.
