Manchester United will ‘prioritise’ the signing of Erling Haaland this summer ahead of the Borussia Dortmund forward’s teammate Jadon Sancho.
United were linked with a move for Sancho throughout last summer’s transfer window but were unable to make progress on a deal, Dortmund having demanded a British transfer-record fee in excess of £100m for the England international.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were unwilling to meet that valuation amid the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic and Sancho remained at the Westfalenstadion, though the Red Devils were anticipated to return with renewed interest in 2021.
However, according to the Express, United will now turn their attentions towards Haaland with Solskjaer having admitted recently he has been monitoring the progress of his compatriot in German football.
Mason Greenwood’s commitment to a new long-term deal this week and the signing of Amad Diallo have provided the Red Devils with young and exciting options on the right-hand side, and the report suggests that the signing of a new forward will now be the club’s focus.
Haaland has established himself as one of world football’s most exciting talents since signing for Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg in 2020, scoring 39 goals in just 41 appearances across all competitions.
Solskjaer previously worked alongside the 20-year-old at Molde and the club will consider a move as they assess their centre-forward options, with last season’s leading scorer Anthony Martial having struggled for form so far this season.
Haaland is understood to be interesting Europe’s biggest clubs with Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid having all been linked and the forward has a release clause of €75m in his contract that will become active in 2022.
Dortmund, however, may look to sell the star this summer at a higher price than that obligated fee with the Bundesliga side feeling the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic and in danger of missing out on qualification for the Champions League.
