After making history in Argentina’s Copa America triumph last weekend, Lionel Messi has since etched his name into the history books of social media, too.
Last Saturday night of course saw Messi return to action, in a Copa America final showdown with arch rivals Brazil.
Argentina headed into proceedings aiming to bring an end to a long and heartbreaking wait for glory in South America, having remarkably not managed to secure the Copa since all the way back in 1993.
When all was said and done at the Maracana, though, clinch the country’s first piece of silverware in almost three decades is precisely what the Albiceleste managed.
A cagey, hard fought (and at times frankly chaotic) spectacle eventually saw a solitary goal separate the nations come the full-time whistle.
After Rodrigo De Paul’s lofted through ball somehow made its way to the feet of Angel Di Maria just beyond the 20-minute mark, the PSG wide-man did superbly to control, before lofting a clever finish over the head of the onrushing Ederson:

On the back of a memorable night in Rio, meanwhile, the vast majority of the chatter, amongst fans and the media alike, has since unsurprisingly surrounded that man Messi.
In adding a long-awaited international title to his bulging trophy cabinet, Argentina’s iconic attacker secured for himself a piece of individual football history:

As outlined above, though, Messi’s record-breaking efforts have since continued away from the pitch, too.
This comes with the Barcelona veteran’s post-Copa finale photo alongside the tournament’s trophy having now racked up just shy of an eye-watering 20 million likes, the most ever by an athlete across any sport:
