Liverpool star ‘will not say no’ to January exit, despite Klopp confidence

Xherdan Shaqiri could leave Liverpool on loan in January, with one club in Turkey reportedly reviving their interest.

Shaqiri has endured a difficult couple of years at Liverpool, despite making a good first impression at Anfield. The midfielder started just two league games in their title-winning campaign last season.

Therefore, there were rumours that he could leave the club in the summer. However, he eventually decided to stay.

Shaqiri has since had a few more opportunities, coming off the bench twice in the Premier League this season and contributing one assist. However, he is still on the fringes of the first team.

With Euro 2020 on the horizon, the Swiss midfielder could look to depart in January. According to Fotomac, he could consider a loan move to Galatasaray.

The Turkish side were a potential suitor for Shaqiri earlier in the year. Now, Fotomac believe they could come back in for him.

The report claims that Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim has been keeping a close eye on Shaqiri during the international break. He has played in matches against Belgium and Spain for Switzerland.

Shaqiri is looking for gametime ahead of the Euros, which means a loan departure may be in his best interests. He cannot break past Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino in the forward line, and there is plenty of competition in central midfield as well.

In fact, Fotomac claim that he “will not say no” to a loan move to Galatasaray.

Shaqiri remains under contract at Anfield until 2023, so the club are not in a hurry to sell him permanently. However, he could change his plans and leave on loan.

Klopp hints at bigger Shaqiri role

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently hinted that he had a different idea for Shaqiri, though.

Indeed, at a time when Liverpool are suffering a lot of injuries, players as versatile as Shaqiri could be key to them maintaining their momentum.

“Shaq can play the wing, he has everything for that, but is a creative player and played for Switzerland on the No.10 [position],” Klopp said earlier this month.

“They know a lot about football there. They wouldn’t bring him there if they think he is better in another position.

“Shaq is a versatile offensive player. He played for us in the No.8, wing and now No.10 when he came on. That’s all the positions he can play.”
