Bruno Fernandes has set himself an ambitious target for goal contributions following the Manchester United midfielder’s impressive start to the season.
Fernandes has been amongst the finest players in the Premier League since signing for the Red Devils from Sporting Lisbon in January, scoring 17 goals and providing a further 12 assists in just 27 league appearances.
No midfielder in the Premier League has scored more goals or provided more assists since his debut, whilst he also leads Europe’s top five leagues for goal involvements by midfielders during that same timeframe.
The 26-year-old’s sensational start since his mid-season signing last term has continued into the current campaign, with Fernandes the heartbeat of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side having registered 14 goal contributions (9 goals, 5 assists) for the season already.
That figure means that the Portugal international is currently averaging better than a goal contribution per game, and Fernandes has set his sights on maintaining those extraordinary standards across the course of an entire season.
“I think, as I’ve said before, it’s easy when you play in a team like Manchester because there are so many good players around you,” he told the official club website. “They help you to be better and I am here to help them be better.
“So I think, of course, numbers are really good but it is now that I need to start to improve. It will be more difficult from now and I mean difficult day-by-day and game-by-game because the players will know me better.
“Of course, I am really happy to have these numbers and, obviously, it is not easy to get to this point with these numbers but I want to do better and better, more and more. I want to finish the Premier League this season with more goals and assists than games. That would be good.”
Next up for United is a Carabao Cup quartet final against Everton on Wednesday evening before facing Leicester City in Boxing Day’s early kick-off.
