Gareth Bale has discussed retiring from football altogether with his family after playing at Euro 2020, according to a report.
The 31-year-old has enjoyed a return to more regular football this season with a loan at Tottenham. However, his move back to the club from Real Madrid did not go completely as planned. He arrived in London with injury and struggled to get game time until the latter parts of the campaign.
Talk of his plans dominated his interviews earlier this year, but he gave a rather cryptic response. On Sunday, though, he opened up, admitting that he would “cause chaos” if he announced his plans before Euro 2020.
Indeed, he has said all the while that he wants to focus on the tournament with Wales before going any further.
Bale has one year left on his Madrid contract amid doubt over whether he would fit back in with the fans and boss Zinedine Zidane – two factors in him leaving last summer.
According to Spanish publication ABC, though, the winger is considering packing up completely in football after the summer.
He has reportedly held talks with his family about making the decision, which would see him terminate his contract.
In doing so, he would be entitled to a big slice of the value of his contract. Bale earns £600,000 per week at Madrid, part of which Spurs agreed to pay to finance his temporary spell.
The report also claims that Bale ‘dislikes’ the demands of modern, professional football. He also supposedly does not have it in him to continue making sacrifices for the game.
Overall, the forward ended up with 16 goals in 34 games this term. He showed his class with a brace against Leicester on Sunday’s final day.
After coming on a substitute, his double helped Spurs overcome their deficit and dump the Foxes out of the Champions League.
Bale avoids causing chaos
Speaking last Sunday about his future, Bale said: “I know what I’m doing, but it’ll just cause chaos if I say anything.
“All I’m thinking about now is finishing this season off strong and we meet up straight away for the Euros.
“I’m not thinking about anything else other than Wales.”
