Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan feels Marcelo Bielsa should look to take Liverpool striker Divock Origi to Elland Road in January.
Origi, 25, has been with Liverpool since 2015 but has rarely been able to command a regular starting berth. Used mainly from the substitutes’ bench, he featured in 28 games during the Reds’ title-winning season of 2019-2020.
However, the Belgium international has played just seven minutes of Liverpool’s 2020-21 league campaign. He has made three starts in the Champions League but seems down the pecking order in terms of the league.
With that in mind, Jurgen Klopp may look to send him out on loan in January.
It will not be the first time that has happened, as he played the 2017-18 season on loan with German club Wolfsburg. He saw plenty of action in the Bundesliga and bagged six goals for the club.
Liverpool’s embarrassment of riches up front makes it unlikely he will see much action at Anfield this term.
Leeds are in need of new faces in their quest to stay in the top flight. Having been promoted, they made an encouraging start but are now down in 14th spot in the standings.
Some fresh firepower in January would not go amiss and Whelan wants then to target Origi.
“I would like to see Leeds show a bit of intent in the January market and go and sign a striker who has experience in the Premier League,” he told Football Insider. “We need a player that will be complimentary to the side and Origi is the perfect fit.
“He comes from great stock at Liverpool. He likes to run in behind, he is a powerhouse, has pace, strength and aerial ability. We predominantly attack down those wide areas so he is ticking a lot of boxes for me.”
Midfielder on the radar
A 6-2 thrashing at the hands of Manchester United last time out started the alarm bells ringing. The Yorkshire outfit are still seven points above the relegation zone but things can change quickly.
Bielsa craves more creativity in the middle of the park and Reading’s Michael Olise is a player they want. The midfielder has impressed in the Royals’ strong start to the Championship season, with four goals and seven assists.
Reading want to extend his contract which expires in June 2022 to increase his buyout fee. A report by Football Insider claims Olise has an £8m release clause in his contract and Liverpool are also keen.
