Christian Pulisic makes Champions League history with Chelsea opener vs Real Madrid

Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic etched his name into the history books of the Champions League, after finding the net versus Real Madrid this evening.

Benzema levels it up

The first of two Champions League semi-final ties is of course currently playing out in the Spanish capital.

The clash sees competition experts Real playing host to Premier League giants Chelsea, in a highly anticipated showdown between two of the continent’s finest.

The visitors headed into proceedings with spirits high in the club’s camp, having booked their spot in the final of the FA Cup at the expense of Manchester City a little over a week ago, before further solidifying the club’s top-4 berth courtesy of a 1-0 win over West Ham.

In turn, it did not come as a major surprise when it was Chelsea who went on to open the scoring at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano this evening.

A dominant opening to the action eventually culminated in Christian Pulisic showing superb composure to round Thibaut Courtois and slot home:

Hosts Real, though, despite looking altogether on the ropes, soon pulled level.

After a long ball to the back post was nodded back across goal by Eder Militao, Karim Benzema was on hand to control and lash home beyond Edouard Mendy in clinical fashion:

Pulisic’s special moment

As outlined above, however, whilst it is Benzema’s equaliser which has proven the main talking point heading into the interval, it was in fact the opener netted by Pulisic which saw a piece of Champions League history made.

As the American influence on the European game continues to grow, the Chelsea wide-man established himself as the United States’ highest-ever scorer in the competition:

Not only that, but Pulisic has also become both the only American to ever find the net versus Real Madrid, and the first to notch in a Champions League semi-final:
