A group of senior Arsenal players have broke away from their teammates in support of exiled midfielder Mesut Ozil’s return, according to a report.
Ozil had suffered a lack of game time in previous seasons but his situation reached boiling point this campaign.
Indeed, manager Mikel Arteta did not name the 32-year-old in his Premier League or Europa League squads.
As such, Arteta has had to answer numerous questions about the decision, which has caused lengthy debate. More recently, though, the creative midfielder’s absence has proved pertinent with the Gunners struggling for goals.
Various pundits have disagreed over Ozil’s return to the squad. According to The Telegraph, divisions have also emerged about the player within the Arsenal dressing room.
The newspaper claims that Ozil has the support of ‘a group of senior players’. However, there remain a number of other stars who still agree with Arteta‘s decision to snub him.
What’s more, Ozil has reportedly ‘impressed’ his colleagues in training recently. But with his contract expiring in June, speculation will again arise over his next steps.
At this stage, it looks likely that he will leave with no sign of him returning to the fold – let alone signing an extension.
Asked by a fan on Twitter recently if he felt happy at Arsenal, Ozil said: “It’s a very difficult time for everyone around the club – not just for me.
“The situation is frustrating for everyone. Of course I would wish I could help the team especially right now, but as long as I don’t get the chance I just hope that we get better results very soon again.”
Ozil gets his Arsenal wish
Arsenal delivered on that wish with a 3-1 Boxing Day victory over Chelsea.
Indeed, the fact that the Gunners ended their recent barren run made the win more significant.
Speaking after the game, Arteta admitted that he was running out of answers in the hunt for a positive result.
