Borussia Dortmund are reportedly set to double Jude Bellingham’s wages after Chelsea were linked with the dynamic young midfielder.
Dortmund fought hard to get their hands on the 17-year-old. He eventually signed for the Bundesliga club last summer. The undisclosed fee was understood by Sky Sports to be an initial £25m. It made him the most expensive 17-year-old in history and he has already begun topay that back in Germany. Bellingham has made an amazing 42 appearances for Dortmund this season and has already received admiring glances from some of Europe’s big clubs.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter, AS Roma, Bayern Munich and all the top teams in England, especially Man Utd were chasing Bellingham. The player even visited Carrington and was introduced to Sir Alex Ferguson. But such is Dortmund’s reputation for blooding young players, the England starlet headed for Germany.
A return to England, where he made his name with Birmingham, is inevitable. And earlier this month, according to Eurosport Chelsea were the “most interested” suitor for Bellingham’s services.
That has sent Dortmund officials to quickly look at Bellingham’s contract. The midfielder signed a “long-term contract” at the club on a reported £42,000 per week. However, BVB officials are proposing to scrap that contract and offer Bellingham an £82,000-a-week deal to keep Chelsea at bay, according to Bild.
Eurosport also claim that Liverpool are also keeping tabs on Bellingham. Manchester City also expressed an interest before he headed to Germany.
If any Premier League club are to revive their interest this summer they can expect to pay considerably more than the £25m Dortmund invested.
Gareth Southgate called Bellingham up to his senior England squad in March. He played 45 minutes in the World Cup qualifying win over San Marino. He was later left out of the Under-21 squad for the Euros and looks set to be named in England’s 26-man senior Euros squad.
Bellingham’s maturity praised
Southgate has gone on record, saying he is hugely impressed with the temperament and maturity of Bellingham.
“I couldn’t be more impressed with him as a human being. His parents have done a fantastic job and should be very proud. He’s got humility, good manners, confidence and a lovely way about him,” Southgate said recently.
“There was a video that the FA released of some personal insights of his and I couldn’t believe some of his interactions with the fans in Birmingham, at the age of 16, 17.
“Not many players have the confidence to go and get the fans going. And get them roaring behind the team when they’ve just scored, and I thought that was quite significant in showing the level of his thinking. And his comfort in going and putting himself out there to do that.
“So I’m very, very impressed with him. We’ve got to make sure that we look after him, that we help with that education and help with that development.
“We’ve got to protect him at the right times but he’s going about it in exactly the right manner.”
