Tottenham have begun monitoring fringe Celtic midfielder Ismaila Soro ahead of a potential transfer swoop, according to a report.
Spurs bolstered their midfield last summer by bringing in Denmark international Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton. The 25-year-old has proved a key influence, playing every Premier League minute this season. What’s more, Tanguy Ndombele has enjoyed an upturn in form to play a big role.
However, ahead of the summer transfer window, Spurs are already making plans for potential additions.
Indeed, the Daily Mail claims that they are monitoring Soro as a potential holding midfield signing.
The 22-year-old moved to the Hoops from Israeli side Bnei Yehuda in January 2020, under Neil Lennon’s stewardship.
However, he struggled to have much of an impact and has only made 33 appearances since then.
Soro’s chances were immediately hampered by a knee injury after his arrival at Parkhead. Furthermore, while he has made 16 Premiership appearances this season, he spent the first half of the campaign largely on the bench.
According to the Daily Mail, though, his lack of action has not deterred Spurs from considering a swoop.
In fact, the newspaper claims that the club see him as a ‘holding player of talent’ who could ‘bolster’ their ranks.
Spurs would face obstacles in signing Soro, namely over a work permit. The Ivory Coast-born player would have to go through an appeal if talks between Tottenham and Celtic progress.
Spurs’ current midfield ranks could undergo change this summer; Dele Alli received interest from Paris Saint-Germain in January, but stayed in London.
Meanwhile, Harry Winks has struggled for match action and has been linked with a move to Southampton.
However, all that could change depending on who Spurs bring in as manager to replace Jose Mourinho, which is their biggest priority.
Tottenham considering Ajax boss
Tottenham had Julian Nagelsmann on their radar to step into the dugout, but he will move to Bayern Munich next season.
As such, new names have more recently entered the fray, including Ajax’s Erik Ten Hag.
The Dutchman has a strong record with the Eredivisie team, including a 73 per cent win rate.
