Wolves can forget Doherty with swoop for “formidable” £31.5m sensation owned by Mendes – opinion

Wolves are set to lose one of their key cogs in Matt Doherty, but they can alleviate matters if they get a move on with one of their reported summer targets…

What’s the word?

According to Le10 Sport earlier this month, the Midlands outfit tabled a bid for Angers SCO left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, who has also received an offer from La Liga outfit Valencia.

Both Manchester teams hold an interest in the 19-year-old but as a client of Jorge Mendes’, you’d imagine Wolves have a good chance to land him.

And this week, head coach Stephane Moulin revealed that his young sensation “is going to leave” the club this summer, which means someone must be close to paying their €35m (£31.5m) asking price.

Jonny on the right

Now, the France U21 international may well be a left-sided defender, but that’s fine as Jonny could revert back to his old right-back position.

The 26-year-old has played on the right for both Atletico Madrid and the Spanish national team before Nuno Santo decided to switch him to the other flank.

With Doherty out the door, it would be wise to flip him back once again so that Adama Traore can stay further forward whilst Ait-Nouri competes with Ruben Vinagre for the other place.

The Angers starlet is a really impressive talent having averaged 1.7 tackles, 1.5 clearances, 1.1 dribbles and 0.8 crosses per game in Ligue 1 this season, via WhoScored.

It was only an injury that curtailed his emphatic campaign in France with Total Football Analysis dubbing him a “teenage left-back phenomenon” due to his attacking nature whilst elsewhere he has been dubbed “formidable”.

His playing style is almost a perfect fit for Nuno’s system at Molineux, so for once, that link with Mendes could really save the Midlanders’ bacon.

The season is just over two weeks away.
