Leicester are poised to hand star midfielder Youri Tielemans a bumper new contract, tying him to the King Power until 2025 and ensuring his buy-out clause is raised significantly.
The Belgium midfielder has impressed again this season, playing 45 times in all competitions for the Foxes. In those games, he has proved an influential figure, often dominating in midfield. Indeed, he has scored eight goals and created three more as Leicester look to secure a top-four finish.
Such has been the 23-year-old’s form, he has been getting admiring glances across Europe and in the Premier League.
Smeets made it clear that Tielemans, who was a £35m signing from Monaco in 2019, is hungry to win trophies. Indeed, Tielemans is a long-standing target for Manchester United. He was considered by them following his initial loan at the King Power from Monaco and have tracked him ever since.
He has been mentioned as a potential successor for Paul Pogba, were the World Cup winner to leave Old Trafford.
However, as a reward for his fine form, Leicester are close to tying Tielemans down to a bumper new deal.
According to Belgian outlet Walfoot, the Foxes are set to make the midfielder their top earner. While his salary is not disclosed, they report he’s in for a ‘significant pay rise’.
The new deal will run to 2025, succeeding his current arrangement to 2023. In the process, his exit clause will be set at £80m – a fee Leicester hope will dissuade his suitors from making an approach.
Tielemans keen to win trophies
While it is not stated when the deal will be agreed, Walfoot claims Tielemans is ready to accept the offer.
Asked if he can achieve his ambitions with Leicester, Tielemans replied: “Yes, why not? This is a club where you have the best environment you can have, especially with this new training ground. The people around you just want the best for you.
“It’s brilliant to be here. I really like it here. We’ll see what’s coming in the future.
“But I think the environment is just perfect to win trophies here. You can’t predict the future but I think everything around the club and inside the club is made for it.”
Tielemans will have a chance next month to get his hands on a first piece of silverware with Leicester. They take on Manchester City at Wembley in the FA Cup final.
