Arteta decides on Arsenal dilemma as £20m sale is touted

Arsenal are prepared to sell Emiliano Martinez this summer after deciding that Bernd Leno will be their first choice goalkeeper next season.

Martinez has been at Arsenal since 2010, but has spent much of that time out on loan. However, he got his chance in the first team when Leno suffered an injury towards the end of the season.

Martinez impressed in his run in the first team. He was a starter in the FA Cup final, which Arsenal won. His form has given Arsenal a dilemma over what to do with him.

The Argentine shotstopper has made it clear that he wants to be first choice next season. Martinez has designs on representing Argentina, though is yet to play for his country at senior level. If he cannot get what he wants at Arsenal, he is willing to leave.

In fact, Martinez went on record earlier this month to say he would not stay at the Emirates Stadium if Arsenal could not guarantee him first-team football.

He also later revealed that he had offers from as many as 10 clubs – and it now appears one of them may get their chance to sign him.

According to The Athletic, Mikel Arteta has decided to stick with Leno as Arsenal number one next season. Therefore, they will sell Martinez.

Martinez replacement identified

The report claims Arsenal want a fee of around £20m for the 27-year-old. Afraid that may price him out of an exit, Martinez wants them to half that valuation.

Martinez is most likely to move to Spain if he does leave Arsenal. He previously spent time on loan in La Liga with Getafe in the 2017-18 season. In the present day, Valencia and Real Betis are among the competitors for his signature.

There are just two years left on Martinez’s contract, through which he earns £20,000-per-week. Talks over an extension were delayed during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, so Arsenal will pay him a bonus worth either six or seven figures.

Reports in Saturday’s Paper Talk claimed Arsenal had designs on Brentford’s David Raya as a replacement.
