Manchester United and Tottenham have made an approach to Ajax over a deal to sign Donny van den Beek, according to a report.
Van de Beek emerged as a top midfielder in the 2018/19 campaign, when he helped Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals. He was one of 30 players to receive a Ballon d’Or nomination last year.
As such, reports in recent months linked the Dutchman with an exciting move away. Links with Real Madrid were rife, while United are also reportedly keen.
Now, according to Spanish paper Sport, both United and Tottenham have contacted Ajax over a potential deal.
The Holland international looks set to be allowed to leave if any side matches Ajax’s £49m asking price.
However, the Catalan paper claims both Premier League sides could miss out on Van de Beek. That’s because, it is claimed, the player is waiting on Barcelona to make their move.
As per the report, they claim Van de Beek has his heart set on a move to Catalonia. They state Van de Beek wants to team up with former Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong in midfield. Furthermore, Van de Beek enjoys a good relationship with former Holland boss Ronald Koeman, who has recently been appointed Barcelona boss.
Van de Beek has suggested he could be on the move this summer. He has hinted, however, a move could well have been sorted before now but for other factors.
“It is very messy, in any case a very messy period in terms of transfers,” he told Fox Sports. “Nothing is certain yet. I am still a player of Ajax and I am still proud to be there.
“If there had not been the coronavirus, it might have been different now. There is no clarity now and we have to wait and see how it turns out.”
Pundit can see Van de Beek at Barcelona
ESPN pundit Steve Nicol reckons Van de Beek will be a great addition for Barcelona if they can finalise a deal.
Nicol said: “I think it would be great for both him and Barcelona. I think he could go into that middle three, [Arturo] Vidal is past his best.
“Van De Beek can play better passes than [Arturo] Vidal anyway.
“I think he can get in the box and would score more goals than Vidal. Yeah, this sounds like a smart move for both player and club.”
