Lost 84% of his duels: £75k-p/w Spurs lightweight hugely let Mourinho down last night – opinion

Tottenham Hotspur may have advanced into the next round of the EFL Cup with a victory over Jose Mourinho’s former club Chelsea, but one player’s performance has to be a cause for concern.

The visitors dominated the early spells, culminating in a 19th-minute opener from Timo Werner before Spurs debutant Sergio Reguilon teed up Erik Lamela seven minutes from time to make it all-square.

It went to penalties with the first nine all being converted, Mason Mount stepped up and missed to hand Mourinho a victory in north London.

Harry Kane was rested from the off, so the Special One named Lamela and Steven Bergwijn as his two frontmen in a 3-5-2 looking system, though the latter was particularly underwhelming.

The Dutch winger picked up a lowly 6.3 rating and recorded just one shot and one dribble whilst also losing 84% of his duels, losing possession 15 times and failing to have much of an impact in the final third, per SofaScore.

Bergwijn cost Spurs £25m during the January transfer window and whilst he’s not an out-and-out striker, this was his chance to impress as he’s sat behind the likes of Heung-min Son and Lucas Moura in the pecking order right now.

The 22-year-old is also taking home wages of £75k-per-week, which is more than Matt Doherty (£60k-per-week), Giovani Lo Celso (£60k-per-week) and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£65k-per-week), so absolutely needs to do better to justify his selection.

You could argue that it only highlights Spurs’ desperate need for a viable back-up striker but it’s clear to see that their current ‘Plan B’ has plenty of work left to do.

The Spurs lightweight let Mourinho down during a rare start and will need to do more if he’s to feature more regularly this season, especially now that Gareth Bale is in town.
