Gary Neville has praised the impact Paul Pogba has had for Manchester United since his agent suggested he would be leaving the club.
Mino Raiola kicked up a storm when declaring that Pogba’s association with United would soon be over. His comments came at a critical time, hours before their costly loss to RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
Pogba is out of contract in 2022, meaning United may have to sell him at the end of the season to avoid losing him for free. There have been frequent links with the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.
However, the midfielder has played down his agent’s claims and has reaffirmed his commitment to United. And since then, Neville believes the club have seen the best of him.
“When they played Leipzig his agent came out and said he wanted to leave, but since then I have seen the best of Paul Pogba,” he told Amazon Prime Video.
“I have got to say I prefer watching Manchester United when he is playing because he gives them something that might take them on the way to the title. He is a world-class player.”
Neville was highly critical of Raiola in the aftermath of the agent’s interview, but clearly still believes in Pogba.
Pogba was the most expensive player in the world when United brought him back from Juventus in 2016. However, he has not always delivered to the level expected of him.
On his day, though, he remains one of the best in the world in his position. United have been wanting to see him produce those levels more often, and now he is getting there.
His form will be crucial to United’s hopes of competing in the title race. Recent results have seen them charge up the table and some are now throwing their name into contention to win the league.
United revive interest in Dembele
The January transfer window could also be important if United are to battle for honours this season.
Last year, they benefitted from the impact of Bruno Fernandes after a January move, so could look for reinforcements to take them to the next level again.
One name who has been linked with the club in recent months is Ousmane Dembele – an international teammate of Pogba with France.
United identified the Barcelona winger as a target late in the summer transfer window and now there are rumours of a fresh attempt to sign him.
