Questions surrounding the latest Mallory Pugh trade to Chicago

In the final days of what has been a most unusual season, a most unusual trade went down in the National Women’s Soccer League. The peculiarity of the trade was that the Chicago Red Stars, famous for stockpiling future draft picks, shipped three — plus an international spot in 2021 and 2022 — to acquire a pair of prized players.

If Mallory Pugh and Sarah Woldmoe wind up playing their best soccer in Chicago then it is a near certainty this trade will be viewed as a win for Rory Dames and the Red Stars. But how likely is that to happen? Let’s dive in.

An unquestioned talent with a World Cup title on her resume and what should be many bright years ahead of her, the fact is that Pugh’s NWSL story has been told more through the injury report than the boxscore. For Sky Blue in 2020, she made one appearance. It was brilliant, but then there was no more.
