“What I have been told..”: Journo reveals Leeds transfer blow, Bielsa will be furious – opinion

Leeds United are unlikely to secure the services of Marcelo Bielsa target John Swift, according to reports…

What’s the word?

In a recent Q&A with supporters, the ever-reliable Beren Cross of LeedsLive revealed that the Reading playmaker is more likely to leave the Royals for free in the summer, barring an “extraordinary offer” this winter transfer window.

“Swift is an interesting narrative to follow. From what I have been told, he doesn’t think he’ll move next month. Reading have made it clear they would only consider selling him if they received an extraordinary offer for his services,” he said.

“The playmaker will walk away from the Madejski for free next summer, but the Royals are flirting with relegation and he will be critical to their chances of surviving based on his already brilliant output this term.

“If it took less than £7m to turn Reading’s head it would be a close call, but when you consider he’s free just six months later, you’re effectively paying that fee for six months of football under a head coach whose unlikely to think you’re ready to play until a third of the way through that time.”

Bielsa won’t be happy

This would deal the Argentian head coach a considerable blow heading into the January window as he is widely reported to be a big fan of the Reading star.

“[It] was interesting to see John Swift linked over the weekend because Swift is someone Bielsa quietly admires,” The Athletic’s Phil Hay revealed last month.

Despite the struggles at the Madejski Stadium this season, the Portsmouth-born 26-year-old, who was once on the books at Chelsea, has been a real shining light in their season.

Swift has provided the Championship outfit with eight goals and nine assists from 21 appearances, also averaging a whopping three key passes per game, which is the best in the division.

That makes him one of the most creative talents in the second tier, so it’s no wonder Bielsa is hugely keen on signing him.

None of Leeds’ current options have registered more than two assists. In fact, it is only the one player that has managed more than a solitary assist, per WhoScored.

One Leeds Fan YouTuber Conor McGilligan once claimed that the £5.4m-rated dynamo would be “the perfect Leeds signing” as he “has the technical ability that would sort of replicate a Pablo Hernandez, a Samuel Saiz in tight pockets,” as well as dubbing him a “grafter.”

Given the aforementioned praise, his eclectic form in 2021/22 and the mounting injury crisis at Elland Road, you could forgive Bielsa if he was furious by this development.

Swift is a player that could seriously help Untied in their time of need, so it would be disappointing to not try and secure him, especially as he’s out of contract in the summer.

This will surely now be a bitter blow to the 66-year-old.
