Liverpool could face a decision between signing Ozan Kabak or Ibrahima Konate in the summer transfer window, according to a report.
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has reportedly made adding to his defence a priority after this season. Liverpool began the campaign with three senior centre-halves following Dejan Lovren’s exit. However, the trio have suffered long-term injuries, leading to January deadline day swoops for Kabak and Ben Davies.
Kabak, who is on loan from Schalke with an £18million option to buy, has become a centrepiece of the team.
The Turkey international has played seven times for the Anfield club, keeping three clean sheets. Indeed, he performed well in both 2-0 wins over RB Leipzig in the Champions League last 16.
But despite Kabak featuring week-in, week-out for Liverpool, he reportedly remains just as much of a target as players at other clubs.
Leipzig centre-back Konate is one such star; reports on Monday claimed that Liverpool have entered ‘advanced’ talks to sign him, but fresh speculation has denied such claims.
Nevertheless, The Athletic reporter James Pearce has claimed that Liverpool are likely to make only one ‘major’ defensive signing this summer.
Therefore, they could end up choosing between Kabak and Konate.
Even with Kabak currently playing for Klopp, the Reds reportedly feel reluctant to make a decision on his future.
Liverpool are aware that they are currently ‘heavily reliant’ on the 21-year-old.
As such, they want him to feel ‘highly motivated’ every time he plays and so want him to play for his future. That way, club chiefs feel they will see the best of Kabak before making a decision.
However, Konate remains a firm target and could well join in a £34.2million deal, as per his Leipzig release clause.
Liverpool working on cheaper Kabak deal
Pearce adds that Liverpool could pass up on their £18million purchase option for Kabak in the hope of getting a cheaper deal.
Schalke are facing impending relegation, which will likely drive the centre-back’s fee down.
However, should Kabak continue to impress under Klopp, many more clubs could well be tempted to snap him up.
