Aston Villa’s £100m valuation of Jack Grealish is likely to be an ‘insurmountable obstacle’ to Manchester City this summer with the club’s focus on a pursuit of Erling Haaland.
Pep Guardiola’s side are interested in a deal to sign Grealish but will see any approaches met with resistance, Villa having placed a British transfer-record valuation on the influential club captain.
Grealish was linked with a move to Manchester United last summer before signing a new long-term deal with the club, a contract that means Villa are under no pressure to sell amid anticipated interest once more this summer.
Any potential move to the Etihad appears unlikely however, given City’s pursuit of Erling Haaland with the Borussia Dortmund forward the most in-demand player in world football at present.
Each of Europe’s elite are considering a move for the Norway international this summer, who has scored 49 goals in just 49 appearances since signing for the Bundesliga side from Red Bull Salzburg.
City will need to break their current transfer record of £65m by some distance to land the 20-year-old and the Telegraph are reporting that any deal for Haaland will end any possibility of securing the signing fo Grealish this summer.
Reports from the Sun this week claimed that Dortmun will demand a fee of €180m for Haaland, with speculation that the 20-year-old could demand extraordinary wages of around £600,000-a-week.
Those figures may be exaggerated, though the financial commitment in landing the Norwegian will all but rule out the prospect of a second big-money arrival at the Etihad in this summer’s window.
Grealish has shown no signs of agitating for a move away from his boyhood side at present but is understood to be desperate to test himself at the highest level, with much potentially depending on Aston Villa’s form ahead of the Premier League’s run-in.
Dean Smith’s side have shown huge signs of progress this season, though have seen their hopes of securing European qualification stutter in recent weeks amid the absence of the injured Grealish.
